SPOTLIGHT ON:
Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month
Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer's or another dementia, and two-thirds of Americans have at least one major potential risk factor for dementia. Did you know the library recently become a Dementia Friendly Organization through Dementia Friendly America? Our goal is to ensure everyone feels welcome at the library and has access to the resources they need, which is why we offer:

Bettendorf Public Library Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program started last week! Embark on an epic adventure and "Level Up at Your Library" with us this summer. The program runs till August 2, and registration is available in person and online. Fun reading challenges and epic events await players of all levels!
  • Adults can power up by earning a voucher to the Friends of the Library bookshop and entering a raffle drawing for $50 gift cards.
  • Teens can level up by diving into books and gaining raffle tickets for legendary loot, including a Nintendo Switch.
  • Children will collect epic rewards throughout the campaign, including a wooden quarter good for a free book at the Friends of the Library Bookshop, a Rubik’s cube, and a book. They can also enter a raffle for prizes such as LEGO sets, a Nintendo Switch Lite, and a telescope.
Let the adventure begin!
 
The Adult and Teen Summer Reading Programs are funded by the Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library. The Children's Summer Reading Program is presented by Ascentra Credit Union, Eye Surgeons Associates, Quad City Bank & Trust, Twin State Inc., and IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union through the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation.

Summer Concert Series: Fair Warning
Thursday, June 19
6:30-8 p.m.
Join us for an outdoor concert with Fair Warning this Thursday at 6:30 p.m.!
Fair Warning delivers the finest rock ‘n’ roll from the classic era, with a high-energy show featuring your favorite hits from the '70s and '80s. Enjoy songs by Bon Jovi, Journey, Van Halen, and more. This band will have you singing, dancing, and having an unforgettable time!

Flavor Train QC and Sweet Shardae shaved ice truck will be on site, and you are also welcome to bring food and drink to the show. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the library.

The Summer Concert Series is funded by the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation and supported by TBK Bank, Duck Creek Tire & Service, Bettendorf Rotary Club, and Harrington's Pub.

All-ages events
School of Adventure: Learn Dungeons & Dragons with the Dealt Hand
Tuesday, July 1
1:30-4:30 p.m.
Learn to play Dungeons and Dragons as a family with the help of The Dealt Hand. This session, played as a large group adventure, provides an overview of D&D rules. It’s a great way to build confidence with the system basics while getting plenty of participation. Players will leave with a character sheet, a Dealt Hand rules reference sheet, and a School of Adventure sticker.
 
Registration is required for all participants.

Stop in and join us for friendly games of chess! No experience is required; we are happy to teach you the rules to get you started. This club meets every other Saturday, and all skill levels are welcome.

Join Paddington as he returns to deepest, darkest Peru.

Dragon Training Academy
Thursday, June 26
10-11 a.m.
Inventor and time traveler Brock Barnabas needs your help dealing with an overpopulation of dragons. Master the skills needed to defend against and tame dragons—then prepare to be sent to Medieval times to put your skills to the test! But wait—instead of sending you to the past, Brock pulls a dragon here. Can you use your newly learned skills to tame the dragon in the room?
 
The show concludes with a meet-and-greet with a baby animatronic dragon.

Fan Club
Tuesday, June 24
2:30-4 p.m.
Share your fandom love and make new friends!

Tweens and teens ages 10-14 are encouraged to share their love of all things horror this meeting. Think Goosebumps, Five Nights At Freddy's, and more.
 
This club meets throughout the summer, and each meeting will be dedicated to a different fandom, chosen by club members, with themed snacks, books, shows, games, or crafts.

Teen After Hours Movie Night
Friday, June 27
6-8 p.m.
Level up at your library with a movie night! Enjoy popcorn and soda while we watch a teen-only showing of Jumanji. Bring your own candy and all your friends!
 
The library closes at 5:30 p.m., so the front doors will re-open for the event from 5:45 to 6 p.m. when the movie begins. Registration is required.

Saturday, July 19

Join us for a lively discussion of Slay by Brittney Morris! Enjoy snacks and get to know other teen readers.
 
About the book: An honors student at Jefferson Academy, seventeen-year-old Keira enjoys developing and playing Slay, a secret, multiplayer online role-playing game celebrating black culture, until the two worlds collide.
 
Copies of the book will be available at the library starting Monday, June 23. Registration is required.

Learning Libby: An Introduction to the Library's Digital Titles
Wednesday, June 18
7-8 p.m.
Libby is the app from OverDrive that allows you to check out digital books and audiobooks from the Library. This class will take you through the process of downloading the Libby app, then searching for, checking out, reading or listening to, and returning a digital title. We'll end with a question and answer period.
 
Bring your device, your library card, and your app store login information with you, and you'll leave with a book or audiobook downloaded and ready to go!
 
Registration is required. If this time doesn't work for you, book a Skill Building Session for one-on-one or small-group help with a library staff member.

Intro to Laser Engraving and Cutting
Saturday, June 28
2-3 p.m.
Learn the basics of using the Library's laser!
 
The Library's laser can engrave and cut a variety of materials including wood, acrylic, fabric, cork, rubber, slate, glass, and so much more.
 
During this free class, Library staff will demonstrate how to prepare artwork for engraving and cutting. You'll also learn how to operate the laser and the safety measures required.
